Since launching our School ReadY Program earlier this year, we have been on an exciting journey to improve the early literacy and oral language skills of children at our centres!
Progress Behind the Scenes
In July, we began the second phase of our program evaluation, focusing on data collection at four of our early learning centres: Yappara House, Brabham, Westminster, and Kalgoorlie. This involved a remarkable team effort, with directors and educators collaborating closely with our research team to carry out data collection. Dr. Tessa Weadman from LaTrobe University, Dr. Simmone Pogorzelski from Edith Cowan University, Literacy Specialist Renee Chakaodza, and Mission Impact Lead Kirsten Flint assessed 50 children across the four centres. We are excited to see the results next year after we gather post-test data.
Inspiring Training Day
In August, we held an inspiring professional development day for our educators across the state. There were 35 in attendance, including educators, directors, OSHC coordinators, and head office staff. Attendees spent the morning learning about the research behind the program, exploring the skills the program helps children develop, and practised delivering lessons. The afternoon session was a chance for staff to connect, exchange stories and strategies with those from other centres.
Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive, with quotes highlighting the engaging nature of the training and valuable insights gained. One educator said, “The training was fun and professional; I learned a lot that I am now confident to implement”. Another shared, “I feel very positive about helping to grow young minds for future schooling.” Many appreciated learning about the “why” behind the program and the research supporting it.
Our Literacy Specialist, Renee Chakaodza was inspired by the dedication of our staff, many of whom travelled long distances, sacrificing time away from their families to enhance their skills and, ultimately, the futures of the children in their care.
Welcoming Guests from Canberra
Later that month, we hosted a delegation from Canberra eager to see the School ReadY Program in action. Over two days, they visited East Cannington, Yappara House, Baldivis, and Brabham. Leah Taylor, the main contact for their visit, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to observe our educators and engage with the children, stating, “Thank you for taking the time to share your journey with School ReadY and allowing us to see it in your ELCs. We truly valued this opportunity to learn about the program and to hear about the impact it is already having at The Y.”
Looking Ahead
We will continue to implement the program across all 14 of our centres and anticipate even more positive outcomes for the children we serve. Together, we are building the foundation for a lifelong love of learning, ensuring our children are readY for school and readY for life. The journey continues, and we can’t wait to see the exciting developments that lie ahead!
